VX6 Bagged Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
A weightless wonder that…

I've been a user of the vacuum cleaner brand most often associated with bagless design for many years, so was very interested in trying a vacuum cleaner from another well-regarded manufacturer that uses the more traditional bag. I'd recently had a new vacuum provided by the other manufacturer after a problem during servicing of my old model, so I was able to perform a fair head-to-head test between a bagless upright and this AEG cylinder vacuum.
The AEG is more powerful, more maneuverable and was able to remove more dust and debris from the carpets. A simple, elegant design with spare parts that don't cost much and a more pleasant experience when replacing the bag instead of trying to tap dirt out of a cylinder, causing a dust cloud.
A pleasant surprise when first starting the machine is how quiet it is - you could still watch television or listen to the radio at a reasonable volume while the machine is running. My newer bagless cylinder is quieter than the cyliner it replaced (the filter seals not being completely flush made it sound like a dying albatross) but the AEG is at a level I wouldn't have thought possible with a vacuum.
Edge-to-edge cleaning was also much better - crumbs and dust in the corners or against furniture could be picked up by the AEG that the other vacuum failed to collect. In some cases the suction on the AEG is so powerful I had to reduce it in order to be able to move the cleaning head across the carpet surface. Cleaning the stairs was also a doddle - just remove the tube from the flexi hose and replace with the smaller cleaning head.
There's only one issue I found with the cleaner, that I would categorise as minor annoyance than anything else - the cord return function is not powerful enough to retract the power cable, and the cable needs 'fussing' back into the machine. Given that my other machine requires me to manually wrap the cable between two plastic poles, this isn't much of a hassle, but it would have been better had it been able to retract the cord more fluidly. My grandmother had an ancient Electrolux (the parent brand to AEG) that had a return mechanism so powerful I imagine it would have pulled anything that might have trapped the cable with it when operated.
That said, this is an excellent and very capable machine, with a wide range of OEM and 3rd party bags available. The air filter is washable, and the machine and parts are all well made and of good quality, so should last you many years.
