TV with great image and…

A bit of background - I tend to buy the best TV available on the market and then stick to it until there are leaps in image quality. For the last 9 years my TV has been a top-end plasma, which allowed to me skip all the poor LCDs released after plasmas were discontinued, as well as early OLED sets with their initial problems. 6 months ago I finally made the switch to LG OLEDs in the form of 55C1 and 48C1 for smaller rooms, and finally got 55G2 as my main TV.
Instead if jumping on the band-wagon and producing a review after 1-2 hours, I decided to spend some quality time with it, so:
First, the good:
Great picture quality - while I can understand the ‘gasps’ of reviewers upgrading from LCDs, it’s not THAT a leap from plasmas, but certainly a better TV all-around in HDR, especially watching UHD disks, where I can rate it as ‘great’. Blacks, viewing angles, colour accuracy - all is good, it’s a level above competing technologies at the moment.
Great design, especially compared to C1/2s, which are impossible to handle due to thinness of the bezel
Finally sufficient brightness compared to other OLEDs, especially 48C1 which was barely adequate as the daytime/‘lights on’ TV
Great apps for major streaming services, Apple TV/Prime/YouTube/Netflix/Disney+, fast and snappy, with excellent picture and sound quality, supporting Dolby Vision and Atmos where needed
Decent sound
Now to the less exciting stuff:
The menu and home screen are appalling. While they’re speedier than on C1, where the menu is nigh unusable, they’re still far less smooth than streaming boxes, and are RIDDLED with ads that you can’t switch off - it’s reprehensible and unjustifiable
No decoding or even passthrough of DTS/DTS HD MA - which makes it much more difficult to use with sound-bars with just 1 HDMI port. Thankfully at least it passes through Dolby TrueHD in addition to usual Dolby and Atmos
Limited app selection compared to dedicated TV boxes and competing TV OSs - eg no FIIT etc
My particular unit has annoying coil wine when browsing menus - it goes away when watching content, and you wouldn’t be able to hear it anyway with any sound coming out, but very annoying nonetheless
My unit has very annoying tendency to break bright pictures into horizontal bars when such a picture appears on the screen, which is v distracting
it’s far from a flawless TV. The last 2 issues might be fixed after servicing my particular set, and if confirmed by LG support, I would rate G2 as 4.4/5.
