Lives up to the Ultimate…

Initial thoughts: The AEG 8000 Ultimate vacuum certainly lives up to the ultimate title! On opening the box was pleased to see each part was well packaged in recyclable “Paper” and held in 2 layers of moulded cardboard. On the top was a simple diagram showing how to fit the pieces together which was extremely easy!
The cleaner itself has 4 pieces (handle, shaft, cleaning head and battery) which clip in and also detach with quick release buttons. The docking station has 3 pieces, a stable base, upright and attachment store. All pieces are sleek looking and fairly robust.
I discovered I was able to use it straight away out the box, although the instructions did say it takes 2½ hours to fully charge, which I did when the battery first ran down.
There are 4 modes in total: Auto (which adapts the power to match the surface you are cleaning) which I used as the “default” setting whilst using, and MIN, MID and Turbo modes (though the battery life is reduced dramatically with the increase of suction/power). The advertised life varies from 35 minutes down to just 6 minutes when used intensively. You can switch between each modes with a single button on the handle that cycles though each,
Performance: I found it effortless to move from the rug to the laminate flooring in both my lounge and kitchen. What I liked best was the ability to use as a handheld to tackle my stairs. This only took seconds to detach the stem and re-attach the brush assembly.
There is a light emitted from the front of the brush assembly, which is great when cleaning under a dark area. However, I felt this more of a gimmick and don’t need this feature. I would have preferred to have the option to turn it off as that would aid battery performance.
The end of the “lance is an integrated crevice tool, but there is also a crevice nozzle for hard to access locations where fluff etc. lurk i.e. down the side of the sofa! It is also light enough to raise above the head to tackle the ceiling cobwebs too!
Cleaning: It was inevitable with 2 girls that their long hairs would be entrapped around the brush roller. However, an invaluable feature is the quick release of this to aid cleaning – with my current cleaner I have to use a screwdriver to take it apart!
The dust and debris is caught in a clear bagless canister, which you can see how full it is. One you pull it forward to release it has a filter attached to it and there is a metal clip to aid removal of this and the fitting, though this might be more of an issue for someone with less manual dexterity. The capacity is quite a lot smaller (less than ½ a litre), so it relies on you emptying it more regularly that a traditional upright. That said given the portability you wouldn’t want a larger capacity, as it would add to the weight and make it more cumbersome.
Using the AEG and writing this up made me realise just how much of a dire need of a good clean my house needed, and how much easier it is now with this product in my life!
From a pricing point of view, it is comparable to an equivalent in a make I am accustomed to. However, I could not fault its performance for what it is, which is a good all-rounder cordless cleaner with some nice features.
