Finally - a wearOS watch…

Having owned/reviewed a few wearOS watches before, I was hoping that finally, FINALLY, there was one that was going to actually live up to the hype. And you know what? This one genuinely has.
Admittedly, the first couple of days there were some rough patches. The initial setup procedure wasn't as buttery smooth as you'd hope, but I got there in the end. The battery life for the first couple of days was also pretty pants. But even with a similar amount of use, after a few days the watch seemed to settle down and now I can end a full day of use with around 30% battery left, which is just fine. I reckon with some stretching this could be a two-day watch.
The continuous heart rate and blood oxygen sensors are very handy. And I've only had the watch lose connection a couple of times. The Google Pay feature worked perfectly first time in the real world, so that's definitely handy!
The strap has stretched out a little, as I would expect from leather - but comfortably so rather than in a way that impairs the look and use of it. The only cheap-feeling bit that I'm not as keen on is that the strap says it's genuine leather. Sure, the top part you can see on the outside is, but take it off and the inside is black plastic/rubber. Seems like a bit of a cost-cutter to me, which is odd given the price of the watch.
Day-to-day performance is where I've been most impressed. Unlike basically every previous smartwatch I've used it was quick to wake up and fast to respond. I've been using it daily for a few weeks now and I rarely have to tell it twice. Even Google Assistant works well!
That does lead me on to my only other gripe - the crown button. The rotating part is fantastic, but I've had to map the button press of it to nothing. Why? Well, every time I have my wrist in a position where my hand it bent back at a right angle to my wrist, the back of my hand presses the button. For example, if I'm leaning against a wall. And it was getting embarrassing having Google Assistant going off every time as a result! Maybe it's just my fat hands/wrists, but definitely something to watch out for. Would be nice if you could wear the watch upside down for example so the buttons are on the other side when worn on the left wrist?
Otherwise, absolutely stellar performance from Fossil and Google and I'm glad I have it! :)
