I’ve been fortunate to try lots of variations of smartwatch, from hi-tech smartwatches through to fitness watches , and they’ve all come up short for me. Yes, they’re great at giving me lots of cool new features, but in reality once the dust settles, there’s very few features you actually use, and the frustration of having to charge them so regularly soon grates. Inevitably, I’ve been left underwhelmed and gone back to my standard watches, which are reliable and dependable but not smart.
When I got the Fossil Hybrid I was expecting more of the same - headline features, but ultimately limited. To my surprise, this watch hasn’t been like that at all. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find that this is a watch that matches me, the way I use a watch, and ultimately gives me what a standard watch does, but with the addition of smart features.
The look and feel are fantastic. The finish is superb, and the metal strap knocks spots off any of the rubber bands that smartwatches come with. This feels like a premium watch, and it is.
Syncing the watch through the app and connecting is a breeze, easier than I thought it would be, and it hasn’t failed to connect to my phone once. Whatever it’s doing in the background, it’s doing it well.
As expected, there’s a plethora of options, everything is customisable, but to be honest none of that interested me, so the watch is on the default settings and that’s absolutely fine. Thankfully the extra stuff isn’t intrusive, and can easily be ignored.
The ‘basic’ functions of the watch for me are to tell the time, which it does excellently, give me the date should I need it, and give me notifications if someone sends me a message (SMS or WhatsApp), as these can easily be missed when my phone is in my pocket. The messaging notifications work really well, I can see who has messaged me, and a preview of the message, which is perfect for letting me know if I need to stop what I’m doing and pick up my phone. For me, this is exactly what I wanted, and the watch does this perfectly, so I am very very happy.
The HR sensor works much better than I expected, but it’s not comfortable to use during exercise. A sportswatch may be better for people who do lots of exercise.
The ink display is lovely but doesn’t work in the dark, despite the built in light. The step counter syncs to Google Fit.
And lastly, the battery - I’m getting 5-7 days out of a charge, which makes using the watch a breeze.
5 stars, great everyday watch
